Happy New Year!
Grooming Equipment and Grooming Problems
The New Holland Tractor and the Trailmaster drag have been delivered and Gus and Bruce Carlson have
put it to use grooming the Bowstring, Marcell North and Cameron Trails.
Gus, Paul Hanson and Jim Jackson with help provided by Andy and Eric at Lakeside Lumber have
completed the addition to the Marcell Garage so that the new grooming rig fits in the garage. Later this
year we hope to pour a concrete floor in the new area as well as install a light and receptacle. Thanks to
everyone who has been involved in the acquisition and preparation for our new grooming equipment.
Barry Pigman moved the ASV DX up to Effie for two reasons. One, it does not comfortably fit in the
Marcell Garage when the New Holland and drag are in the garage. Two, we have a problem with the
John Deere tractor. Brad Franks started grooming the Effie Connection Trail from Effie to Bigfork, went
thru the ice in a marshy, beaver pond type area. He called for help to Jeff Powell, Effie Country Service,
who then suffered the same problem while attempting to pull the John Deere out of the soup. A
bulldozer was needed to pull them both out. It was warm too long late fall and early winter so the bogs
were not sufficiently froze. We did not have enough sleds out to pack the snow. Jim Jackson and the
operators have decided to not groom the rest of the trails until the bogs are safe. It appears that the
groomers (ASV and New Holland) will be out on Monday, January 4th and by the end of the week, all
Marcell Snowdrifter trails will be groomed.
The John Deere quit running while it was submerged. It was towed back to the Effie Garage and will
have to be completely serviced before it can be started. Hopefully there is no major mechanical
The Bowstring Trail has been obstructed by water caused by a new beaver dam on the Turtle River. Jim
Jackson is attempting to solve the problem with the help of the DNR. If we are lucky, the water will have
formed a thick ice surface during this cold weather which will sufficiently hold the weight of the
The Marcell Town Hall re-route is open and will be properly signed in the next few days. We may not
have everything completed on this re-route until next season. Thanks to Jim Jackson, RK Construction, T
& T Excavating and Effie Country Service for getting our trails in proper condition for this winter.
I regret to report that Tony Standt died from injuries on Marcell North Trail on Monday night, December
28th. He and his snowmobile reportedly left the trail and hit a tree(s). See the Grand Rapids Herald
Review for complete details. Our condolences go out to the Standt family. Our trail was freshly
groomed, in good condition, and properly signed.
White Oak Sled Dog Race
The final portion of the race will be located on our trails swinging thru Effie Saturday night & Sunday
morning January 9 & 10th arriving at our Effie Garage at approximately 2:30am for a rest break, then
leaving again down our trails to the Marcell Family Center Sunday morning where a pancake breakfast
will be served. Grant McDougall has volunteered to spend the night at the Effie Garage to help the
mushers with their layover. Tables, chairs and coffee pot will be furnished the City of Effie.
The next membership meeting will be at Richies on Thursday, January 28th at 6:30pm. We will order
from their menu. There will be a short directors meeting at 6pm immediately preceding the
membership meeting. Hope to see you there!
