November 2008 Newsletter

Our annual meeting was held at the Logger’s Inn Backwoods Café on October 13, 2008. They did a great job setting up our wine and cheese social hour. We had a great time and had the opportunity to discuss the new items for our new season’s agenda, and form some committees to get the jobs done.

First of all, the bylaws have been changed to accommodate the members of the board. Our meetings will be held the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:30, with a board meeting at 6:00 prior to our membership meeting. Our next annual meeting will be held October 26, 2009.

The year has started off with many things to discuss at our beginning meetings.
The new line-up of the board is:
President……………………………Jack Hillstrom
Vice President……………………...Archie Wass
Treasurer……………………………Zona Kinn
Secretary……………………………Jane Hillstrom
Director………………......................Ray Hubbard
Director………………......................Mike Hughes
Trail Coordinator…………………...Jim Jackson
Assistant Trail Coordinator….…..…Terry Zaspel
Alliance Representative…………….Mike Hughes

First of all, we needed someone who would be willing to keep abreast of the grants available and apply for them. We thank Mike Hughes for volunteering for this task.

The clubhouse is in dire need of maintenance and repair. Thank you to Archie Wass, Gus Carlson, and Mike Hughes who volunteered to be the committee renovating the clubhouse.

Our insurance is being checked over by Ron Carlson to make sure we are covered and everything is in order. Thanks Ron      It’s a big job.

The John Deere groomer repair will hopefully be done by the time the snow flies. We received $5,000 from the original seller of the machine, and will be getting a grant for the balance of the repairs after they are finished and we have an invoice proving payment. Jack Hillstrom tried to reach Marcel Grooming Equipment to speak with Marcel, but was told that he’s in Wisconsin repairing a machine. We are hoping that they are referring to the machine that’s ahead of us, and we’re next.

The Christmas party plans are in the making, and Nancy Carlson will be contacting a place to have it, people to help, and set up a date. Thank you, Nancy         We will be sending special invitations for to all of our landowners to attend for dinner at the club’s expense in appreciation of their generosity and support.

The winter weekend ride is in the planning stage at this point. Jack Hillstrom has been slaving away at the computer trying to find a place close enough for a good days ride with prices that are realistic. The date we’ve set is Friday, January 30, 2009. The place most accommodating is Ash-Ka-Nam, with AmericInn in Orr running a close second. If you have any input, give Jack or Jane a call at 218-743-3658. We’re close to ‘booking’. We’ve tried setting the date later in the past hoping for warmer weather, but have ‘lucked out’ with the coldest weekends of the year anyhow, so we might as well go in January.

If you would like to win the $200 toward that weekend, get your dues paid by November 18, 2008. We will be drawing the winner at the November membership meeting.

We are also open to suggestions or a planning committee to set up ‘all day’ rides, or ‘overnighters’ with a schedule that can be posted in the newsletter.

We have all decided that if each one of you out there would sign up a new member, our club would be in good shape. You can even tell them that we’re a nice bunch of people. Membership applications are available at The Shop in Bigfork.

The Winter Rendezvous will be held at the Timberlake Lodge in Grand Rapids this season on the weekend of February 6, 2009. We would appreciate participation and volunteers who would be “greeters” representing the local clubs. We don’t know which day the Governor’s Ride will be yet.

The new Itasca County maps will be available with the Corridor Trails marked. Gus Carlson volunteered to pick them up and distribute them. He could probably use a hand in getting them out. Thanks Gus

Our trails are not ready. We need workers to help check and clean them. Call Jim Jackson to volunteer and remember to log your hours. Jim’s number is: 218-832-3861.
Any questions pertaining to working on the trails, call Bob Moore; DNR, Grand Rapids: Trails and Waterways at 218-999-7923.

The Highway 286 clean-up went smoothly and ended quickly. We went to the Timberwolf after and had hamburgers. Thanks to all who participated .
Not a bad job when we have enough people.

A big “Thanks” to all of you who show up at meetings.
The board members get lonely without you.
